Everything you need to know about Kybella
Approved by the U.S. FDA in 2015 to reduce double chin fat, Kybella is an injectable containing deoxycholic acid, a chemical made by the body to help metabolic processes break down dietary fat. Two dozen research studies were completed before the FDA approved Kybella, with results finding that Kybella is a safe and effective cosmetic product for eliminating excess chin fat.1
Who are Good Candidates for Kybella?
Trying to get rid of a double chin through diet and exercise is nearly impossible. In addition, some people are more prone to storing excess fat under their chins than others. Clinically called “submental fat”, under-the-chin fat emerges from a combination of weight gain, genetics and aging.
Ideal candidates for Kybella injections are those who have lost weight by dieting and exercise but have been unsuccessful at reducing the amount of their chin fat. You should also be aware that Kybella is meant to dissolve fat cells only. It will not improve the appearance of excess skin or loose skin folds that do not contain submental fat.2
Who Should not be Treated with Kybella?
If you have an infection affecting the chin and neck area, suffer from a thyroid disorder, or have been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia, you might not be a good candidate for Kybella. You and your doctor will discuss your medical history during your consultation visit.
Does Kybella Provide Permanent Results?
The deoxycholic acid used in making Kybella molecularly imitates the actions of deoxycholic acid produced by the body. Kybella permanently destroys fat cells at injection sites but does not stop new fat cell formation. To enjoy desirable results permanently, Kybella patients should try to maintain their weight and stick to a preferred exercise routine.3
How Many Injections of Kybella are Needed?
This depends on how much chin fat you want to be eliminated. Your doctor will give you multiple injections during one session and schedule another session about one month later. Kybella injections take less than 20 minutes to complete. It may take a few months before you see desired results. Most people need at least two sessions of Kybella injections to achieve a contoured chin line and a more youthful appearance.
Common side effects of Kybella injections are redness, bruising, injection site hardening, and swelling. All cosmetic injectables may produce these side effects, which are temporary and typically diminish within 48 to 72 hours. Any discomfort from injections can be treated using ice or a cold compress.
What Else Should I Know About Kybella?
Results of clinical studies involving the effectiveness of Kybella for reducing chin fat found that nearly 70 percent of subjects receiving Kybella injections experienced significant reduction of chin fat compared to 20 percent of subjects treated with a placebo. In addition, 80 percent of people treated with Kybella reported improved satisfaction with the results. Studies further stated that subjects reported enhanced self-perception and “greater improvement with the emotional and visual impact of the chin (submental) fat.4
