Hormone Replacement Therapy
Can Higher Estrogen Levels Prevent COVID Death?
We already know that estrogen regulates the menstrual cycle and affects the brain, heart, blood vessels, reproductive development, breasts, hair, skin, urinary tract, vaginal lubrication, and weight gain.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its death toll of nearly six million worldwide, new studies aim to understand the relationship between estrogen and COVID-19 better.
In Association between pharmaceutical modulation of estrogen in postmenopausal women in Sweden and death due to COVID-19: a cohort study, researchers analyzed data from three registries:
- the Swedish Public Health Agency’s registry of all individuals who tested positive for COVID
- Statistic Sweden’s registry, which records socioeconomic variables
- and the National Board of Health and Welfare’s registry, which records the cause of death
The purpose of the study was to determine whether augmenting estrogen decreased the risk of death in postmenopausal women diagnosed with COVID-19.
Estrogen therapy is used to treat moderate to severe hot flashes along with other symptoms of menopause.
It’s also utilized to protect against medical conditions like heart disease, breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis in women who can’t take or aren’t seeing results from bisphosphonates.
Additionally, hormone replacement therapy replaces natural hormone production in women with estrogen deficiency and women who’ve experienced early menopause due to natural or surgical causes.
The researchers used retroactive data in agency databanks and, therefore, did not have a blood test with estrogen levels for the population studied.
Thus, for the study, researchers assumed that women on hormone replacement therapy had increased estrogen hormone levels; women on anti-estrogen treatment had small amounts of estrogen levels, and women who met neither of the criteria had normal estrogen levels.
To that point, researchers looked at three groups of women between the ages of 50 and 80 who were diagnosed with COVID-19:
- Those who had decreased estrogen levels due to endocrine therapy,
- Those who had higher levels of estrogen due to hormone replacement therapy, and
- The control group—women who met neither of these criteria for their age group.
During the time studied, 49,853 women in Sweden, in all age groups, were diagnosed with COVID-19.
Fourteen thousand six hundred eighty-five (14,685) women were between 50 and 80 years old and included in the study.
The study identified an association between estrogen supplementation in postmenopausal women and decreased risk of death from COVID-19.
While additional research is needed, this is a strong indication that hormone replacement therapy may protect against an increased risk of death from COVID-19 in postmenopausal women.
